This one of a kind, state of the art retirement home is phase I of a total community development consisting of a nursing home, assisted living congregate apartment hospice, home health villas, medical, and health facilities. An intergenerational day care center located on campus is operated in conjunction with 2 local universities. The “Main Street” environment allows residents to have an opportunity to intermingle with children and toddlers alike.
The layout of Birchaven is comprised of neighborhood clusters, stemming off the “Main Street Service Core”. Cluster of 17 beds serves a unique group of residents. The “East Wing” and “West Wing” are comprised of a total of 136 nursing beds each divided into eight distinct clusters (four clusters per wing). The configuration of these wings allow staff members visual access to all areas for easy monitoring. Amenities in each Nursing Wing includes two dining rooms with cathedral ceilings that opens to a common porch and courtyard, two more private court yards, a private dining room, common serving kitchen adjacent to both dining rooms, two central bathing facilities, six nurse’s aide/kitchen stations, four spacious living rooms each with a fireplace and porch, and ample parlors for comfortable circulation.
The “Independent” area known as “The Heights” is comprised of 51 apartment units ranging from 672 to 1092 sq. ft. It also is has a main 2 story dining room. A mezzanine on the second level gives the residents and visitors a bird’s eye view of the dining room below. The most unique feature of Birchaven is the “Main Street” concept which acts as an indoor “park” for resident use year around. Support spaces such as the chapel, day care center, diner, bank, therapies, etc... are designed to appear as building exteriors in the 2 story clearstory lighted space. Residents, visitors, and children from the day care center can meet in the main street on the way to their destination with in the facility.
