Hearth and Home of VanWert

Van Wert, Ohio
Completed: August 2000
Cost: $1.997 Million
Area: 21,557 Square Feet.

Hearth and Home of Van Wert is a 30 unit Assisted Living Facility designed in the Carpenter Gothic style and also utilizes the "clustered cottage" concept. The design features residential living units grouped into two clusters radiating from a central core. The core includes a central interior courtyard with house fronts leading to each 15 bed cluster. Units are grouped around community living spaces which include a country kitchen, dining, laundry, and large family room. This facility is well suited to serve the needs of a Dementia or more typical assisted living resident within separate clusters. Each cluster can operate independently of the other with separate enclosed courtyards, staff areas, and dining and recreation spaces.

The challenge offered by the owner was to substantially update the appearance of the community entrance and public areas of an exclusive 1970's retirement community. A new mansion-style entry was designed to give the original non-descript modern facility an inviting focal point and residential appeal.

The addition includes, on the first floor, the main lobby with a fireplace, a billiards room, offices, a tastefully renovated stairwell, and a highly-detailed library/boardroom with a fireplace. The second floor, a multi-level dining room extending over the porte cochere below, features coffered and sloped ceilings, exterior balconies and a two-sided fireplace. The extensive use of wood moulding and rich residential detailing throughout the new and updated existing areas creates an inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors.
